At the Kentucky Main Street Awards in Frankfort on Wednesday evening, January 25, the Heart of Danville was honored with three awards:

HOD was honored for its 25th Anniversary as a Kentucky Main Street Program, the longest tenure of all Main Street Programs in Kentucky along with Downtown Henderson.
HOD was awarded "Best of Organization" for its 2011 strategic planning process.
HOD also won the first "Excellence in Main Street Four Point Approach" for its sustained performance in the four points of Design, Organization, Promotion, and Economic Restructuring.

ELMWOOD INN FINE TEAS PLANS MOVE TO DOWNTOWN DANVILLE

PERRYVILLE, Ky. – Danville's downtown renaissance continues to gain momentum as Elmwood Inn Fine Teas announced plans this week to move their international tea business to 135 North Second Street.

Owners Bruce and Shelley Richardson founded the Perryville company in 1990. Their business imports, blends, and packages tea for gourmet and retail stores, national parks, and catalog companies in every state. One of their newest clients is the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, opening June 24. Bruce Richardson was recently named Tea Master for the historic project. He is designing the tea service and the packaged teas for the iconic attraction rising out of Boston Harbor.

In 1996, the Richardsons launched their publishing division, Benjamin Press. They are the largest producer of tea books in North America, collaborating with such international publishers as The National Trust of England. Those offices will also be located in the new facility.

"We outgrew our buildings in Perryville a couple of years ago and began looking for expanded production and warehousing space," said Ben Richardson, the owner's son and office manager. "The larger downtown location allows us an opportunity to add retail space to our expanding wholesale offices and packaging facility."

The new location will include a showroom of all the Elmwood Inn Fine Teas and Benjamin Press products with a tea bar for sampling teas blended on site. The Richardsons hope to have construction completed in the coming months and expect to open in late spring.

Danville, KY -- Preservation Kentucky will host the second annual Preservation Pedal: A Bike Tour of Historic Boyle County on Saturday, July 7, 2012. There will be several touring options available, including a slow downtown tour of Danville and Perryville, as well as more traditional 10, 30, and 50 mile routes. All tours will start in downtown Danville or Perryville with several routes traversing the historic Boyle County countryside.

The Preservation Pedal is held yearly in a different Kentucky community to highlight historic downtowns and rural buildings. Last year's tour was held in Springfield and Washington County on July 2, 2011. Through sponsoring the Pedal in different communities, Preservation Kentucky hopes to support local businesses and raise awareness of our organization, bike touring, and bike friendly amenities in small town Kentucky. All proceeds will go to assist Preservation Kentucky in furthering our mission of historic preservation education and advocacy.

"This is our second year hosting the Preservation Pedal," said Rachel Kennedy, Executive Director of Preservation Kentucky. "It is such an exciting event that successfully gets our mission to folks who may never have heard of us. And most importantly, it gets people out in the beautiful Kentucky countryside looking at historic buildings and rehabilitation projects, while engaging in a healthy activity! It is a real win-win for us." Kennedy continues, "It is a special honor to be able to host this tour in historic Boyle County, in partnership with the Danville/Boyle County Convention and Visitor's Bureau."

"To be able to host such an event is a real thrill for us in Danville/Boyle County," said Danville/Boyle County CVB Executive Director Adam Johnson. "We know riders will fall in love with our scenic beauty as well as our many preservations efforts in both Danville and Perryville. The Preservation Pedal hits the perfect balance between promoting tourism in our area and providing much needed funds for further protection of our great cultural assets."

The lawsuit filed to stop alcohol sales in Junction City promises to open a discussion about Kentucky's antiquated and arbitrary city classification system. Under the current state constitutional provision, a city's classification is what the KY General Assembly deems it to be. That's why Junction City is in the right--legislatively, it has been classified as a 4th Class City. The EDP believes that JC has 3,000+ residents based on past counts and even the Census Bureau's own 2009 estimate. Part of the problem is that portions of JC's residential areas actually have Danville Post Office addresses that create confusion.

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky State Parks have agreed to turn over Constitution Square State Historic Site to Boyle County government, Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Marcheta Sparrow announced today.

The transfer is expected to be completed in January. It will require that Boyle County maintain the buildings and property that make up the historic site. Constitution Square commemorates the signing of the state’s constitution in 1792 in Danville. It includes log cabin meeting houses, the courthouse, jail, Grayson's Tavern Welcome Center and one of the first post offices in what was once the American frontier. All are reconstructions except for the post office, which is the original log structure.

Development of the historic site, which is in the central downtown area of Danville, began in 1937 and was completed in 1955.

“Boyle County agreed to maintain and operate this site and keep it open to the public,” Sparrow said. “This will benefit Boyle County, while at the same time preserving an important part of Kentucky history.”

The county plans to allow local organizations to use the structures for office and conference space.

“Boyle County is delighted to be partners with the Kentucky State Parks to preserve this important historic site,” Boyle County Judge-Executive Harold McKinney said. “We look forward to Constitution Square having a role in our economic development and tourism efforts.”

All employees at Constitution Square have been moved to other parks.
